Naive game management, a struggle to break down a team well-versed in defending deeply and a failure to combat those opponents from counterattacking clincally: the manner of last night's defeat felt a little too familiar for Frank Lampard's Chelsea.

The head coach said "there were elements in the second half" that reminded him of last season, where his young team routinely controlled games only to let a positive result away.

Wolves' Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto took their goals very well but plenty went wrong from a Chelsea point of view.At the other end Chelsea were too blunt. Olivier Giroud took his goal very well but it was their first shot on target and only two more would follow. Timo Werner looks fatigued, Christian Pulisic started brightly but faded (understandable considering his injury), while Kai Havertz was a non-entity.

The failure to break a low block last night and in Saturday's 1-0 defeat away to Everton was another reminder of last season's problems.

"We've been given a different kind of game in these last two games, particularly Everton making it difficult for us to break them down. We didn't really succeed in that.

Wolves play very much with a counterattacking style and we didn't deal with that. The players have to feel that on the pitch. The message was clear: they counterattack. That's disappointing."Most glaring was how they overcommitted in the move that led to Neto finding himself one-on-one with Kurt Zouma before finishing past Edouard Mendy.

It was deep in added time and instead of consolidating, settling for a point, both full backs pushed up in attack and only Zouma and Thiago Silva were left behind with N'Golo Kante sprinting to get back.

"We had enough players to deal with it but we weren't properly prepared to counterpress if the ball got ahead of their box," Lampard said. "We didn't deal well with the free kick at the end of the game. We didn't deal with it well enough."

N'Golo Kante summed it up with great simplicity when speaking to Amazon afterwards: "By trying to win the game we conceded many counter-attacks and they scored late and we lost the game."

The equaliser came from the second phase of a set piece, too, with Thiago Silva's header from a corner landing at Podence's feet. He did well to work into a shooting angle and there was an element of misfortune that it deflected off Reece James. While Lampard was right to say his team have become more secure this season, it was another reminder of past miseries.Last night additionally showed how Hakim Ziyech has already become such a key player for Chelsea - predominantly because of his ability to unlock defences with passes few players can pull off.

Lampard said the Moroccan and Callum Hudson-Odoi are nearing returns following hamstring injuries. He added: "Hakim and Callum will hopefully be training by the end of the week. Whether they are fit or not for West Ham, I'm not sure."

A West Ham team that took four points from Chelsea last season by defending well and taking their chances on the break and counter.
