Frequent Urination in both males and females is when a person feels the urge to urinate more often than usual. And in this case, one's health might be at risk without knowing, while sometimes, over-consumption of fluids might be the cause. But what if you underestimated the problem and it then leads to a serious health issue?

Feeling the urge to urinate more frequently can be a symptom of many problems such as Diabetes, Kidney disease, Urinary tract infection, Pregnancy, Prostate problems, Interstitial cystitis, Stroke or even use of Diuretics can be the cause.

Now, let's take a close look on each of the health problems above and see how they are related to frequent urination.

- Diabetes:
When the body tries to rid itself of unused glucose through the urine, an abnormal frequent urination may be experienced as an early symptom of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

- Kidney disease:
Kidney disease can be caused by urine backed up in the kidneys without flowing freely. Thus, leading to discomfort and urge to urinate more often.

- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):
Some of its symptoms include having fever (when the infection reaches the kidneys), an urgent need to urinate (even though little comes out when you do), and pain or discomfort in the abdomen region.

One may also experience a burning feeling when he/she pees.

- Pregnancy:
On the early weeks of pregnancy, the growing uterus (womb) normally places pressure on the bladder, and this may cause frequent urination.

- Prostate Problems:
When the prostate enlarges and press against the urethra (the tube that carries urine out the body), the urine flow is blocked and the bladder wall becomes irritable and begins to contract, causing frequent urination.

- Interstitial Cystitis (also called painful bladder syndrome):
The cause for this body condition is still not known, and it is characterized by pain in the bladder and pelvic region which mostly leads to frequent urination.

- Stroke:
Stroke or other neurological diseases that damage the bladder can lead to frequent and sudden urges to urinate.

- Use Of Diuretics:
Medications used to treat high blood pressure or fluid buildup works in the kidney and tends to flush excess fluid from the body. By this, frequent urination might be experienced.

Frequent urination is not always a symptom for another disease as it can be caused by over hydration, too much caffeine, alcohol, pregnancy or even stress and anxiety.

Some safe natural lifestyle-changing remedies for frequent urination:
- Taking fluids before bed should be avoided.

- Try to cut off alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweeteners and acidic foods or beverages from your daily routine.

- Some pelvic floor exercises (like Kegels) can help to build up your pelvic health.

Method for Kegels bridge:

1) Simultaneously perform a Kegel & lift hips off floor. 2) Inhale through nose & exhale through mouth.

3) Return hips to floor, inhale & relax. 4) Repeat about 10 times. 5) Perform the exercise 3-5 times per week.

- Bladder retraining techniques such as peeing at fixed intervals that gradually increase, can help reduce the severity of frequent urination.

It is always advisable to see your doctor, most importantly If urinary frequency interferes with your lifestyle or associates with other symptoms like fever, back or side pain, vomiting, chills, increased appetite or thirst, fatigue, bloody or cloudy urine.
