If you're planning on travelling to an English speaking country to study/work, then you should know by now that writing the IELTS exam is a must (in some cases).

Here's everything you need to know.

IELTS is the exam that is used to test a person's proficiency in English language when they're moving to an English speaking country for either work or education.

Countries like the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada require people seeking Visa or permanent residency to take this exam.

The exam has mainly 2 types.

IELTS Academic

IELTS General

The academic is mainly for people seeking higher education or professional training

While the General IELTS is for those seeking work experience, training . So most people moving to Canada, UK and Australia for work sit for this one.

The IELTS exam tests you in 4 categories: Reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

The result is graded in band of 1-9.

With 1 being a non English user, and 9 being an expert user.

Depending on the Visa you're applying for, the pass mark varies. However any score of 6 and above is a good one.

However it's best to get as high as possible.

The major difference between the academic and the general IELTS is in the writing and reading exercise.

OVERVIEW OF THE IELTS EXAM

Here's an overview of the exam:

LISTENING

Total of 40 questions

4 sections

And you have 30mins for this.

At the end, you'd have an extra 10mins to transfer answers to your answer sheet

READING

Total of 40 questions

3 sections

60 mins to answer (NO extra time for this)

And your spellings must be correct to receive point

NOTE: For reading and listening, you MUST use pencil.

WRITING

2 sections

2 questions

The minimum word count for task 1 is 150 words.

The minimum word count for task 2 is 250 words.

You'd be penalised for writing less than the minimum.

Also, Note that task 2 contributes like twice the overall score.

You can use either pen or pencil here.

SPEAKING

3 sections

Numerous questions

14 minutes

Part 1: You'd talk to the examiner about personal information eg about yourself or say hobbies

Part 2: you'd talk about an experience for 2 minutes

Then part 3: you'd discuss your opinion about a topic with the examiner.

Note: IELTS can be computer based or paper based so it's important you choose one that best suits you.

On the question of which is better between the computer based and the paper based, it's better to know which one suits you better.

If your handwriting isn't legible, it's better to use the computer base.

If you're slow in typing you can go for the paper base

However, in the writing part using the computer based helps you to easily count your words.

Currently the IELTS registration is around 75k.

The result is valid for 2years from the date of the exam.

Another thing to note is, getting yourself familiarized with western culture.

Like in the task 2 of writing, you can be asked to write an essay about a particular topic. Usually something western, so what do you do when you have no idea about the topic?

Remember like I mentioned earlier, this section carries more weight in the overall score.

Also, in the speaking part, where you'd converse with the examiner.

Don't focus on convincing him/her, what they're interested in is how you communicate your message, so the both of you can disagree and you won't be penalized for it.

In most cases, listening, reading and writing are ALWAYS taken the same day.

The speaking session can be taken the same day, or seven days before or 2 days after.

It depends on the centre you're taking the exam.

In Nigeria the exam is taken up to 3x a year and a candidate can register for anyone they find suitable.

Usually after registration is completed, a date is chosen and candidates are split into groups.

The information about your exam schedule would be provided to you. So you'd know when your exam is scheduled.

If you need resources, study and practice materials to help you pass the exam with ease.
