BETRAYER IN DISGUISEđ˝đ˝
Episode 8
The late man wife wanted taking me away from the cell but I refused telling her Iâll be fine,
âAre you sure about that? Hope you wonât hurt yourself again? Iâve already called your parents to come tomorrow, the woman said.
âIâll be fine ma, Iâll just take my rest now, I calmly replied and she looked at the officer kind of scared.
âDonât worry ma, weâll keep our eyes on her, the officer said and she nodded and left.
I laid down on the foam and picked a novel to take me off my mood and it worked, eventually I slept offâŚâŚ..
The next morning I was still deeply asleep when I heard a little hit on the gate and I woke up to see the officers looking at me.
âTime to go, your parents are here, the officer said and I got up immediately as he opened the gate and I fled at once and gave my mom a tight hug and didnât know when I began to cry.
âHoney whatâs going on? Why are you crying? Why did they ask to see us? Dear talk to us na stop making us scared, my mom kept asking but I couldnât say anything.
The woman came in and my mom quickly attacked her,
âWhat did you do my daughter! She shouted holding her gown that we had to separate them.
âCalm down mom stop It, I said going in the middle again.
âJoan get out of her let her face me, my mom said taking me away from where i stood.
âWhat did you do to my daughter?, tell me! My mom shouted still insisting for a fight but I held her away.
âIâm so sorry ma, I apologized to the woman who was calm but she nodded giving a little smile.
âCan someone tell me whatâs going on here? My dad asked and Favour walked in.
âOh Joan! She shouted and hugged me before I could say a word.
âThank God i was finally allowed to see you, Iâve missed you so much, how are you faring here? Favour said touching me with an innocent face and i slowly kept her hands down.
âWhats wrong Joan? Are you angry i couldnât visit you here? No one was allowed to see you believe me, She said when I was trying hard to control my anger as I slowly went backwards like I just met the devil. Everyone there looked at us, especially my family who couldnât understand my reaction. Favour was also confused as she attempted to come close to me, probably to tell me more of her lies that if I didnât know the real her, I would have easily believed.
âDonât you there make a step you low budget hypocrite! Do you really care about me? Did you really miss me huh? Oh Iâm sure you planned of telling me how much you love and miss in court, it would have been a romantic one from a best friend! I shouted that made Favour turned round looking at the officers.
The late Man wife gave a smile watching us,
âJoan what are you trying to say? My mom asked.
âShe wasnât a friend, and mom you were right, I should have listened to you, I replied and Favour was gradually going back but an officer violently held her.
âPlease let me go, I donât know what sheâs talking about, sheâs probably not in a good mood, Favour said.
âReally? So are you going to tell us the one who poisoned my husband or should we take it the other way? The woman asked.
âWhat are you saying? I told you all i knew about that day didnât i? Favour replied and an officer looked her straight in the eye with a stern look,
âYou should be happy we honorably invited you over here with no handcuffs, donât push us to the wall. Now Who poisoned him! The officer shouted and Favour fearfully looked at me.
âSpeak! Another officer shouted and she closed her eyes trembling.
âNot me please! Not me! She replied.
âThen who! They barked.
âMy cousin, my cousin, please I didnât want to do this please, Favour replied and my mom screamed and bounced on her.
I simply leaned on the way to gain balance as I felt like fainting.
âSo when I saw her cousin at the counter, that was when she did the evil after all Favour was in charge of the drinks right? I asked myself remembering last Friday as hot tears streamed down my eyes.
My brother approached me and hugged me where I stood while my dad and the officers were still holding my mom who practically was tearing Favour the way I wanted to.
âIts over now okay, its over now, my brother kept saying.
âUhmm i want to apologize for everything your family went through. I actually did what anyone could have done and Iâm ready to compensate you with anything you want, The woman said.
âWhat about the charges? My dad asked.
âIs dropped, your daughter is innocent right? The woman replied.
âWe only have one compensation you can give to us, and that is to make that idiot and her cousin pay for everything they did to my sister, donât let them escape, my brother said.
âSure, she still have a lot to tell us, we will take over from here, the officer said.
âPlease Joan! Ahh please I didnât do it, Iâm sorry, please help me! Favour shouted going on her knees.
âPlease take her out of my sight! The woman shouted and Favour was dragged in as she screamed loud begging just the way i did.
I walked up to my mom and hugged her as my dad and brother were talking to the officers there.
âAre you sure youâre okay? My mom asked and saw the wound and the scratches I gave myself.
âMom its nothing, right now i need a warm bath and my Bed to sleep, I replied and my dad turned and looked at us.
We slowly went to them and i thanked the woman and the officer again,
âSorry Joan and be careful next time. Just imagine if I didnât give you a listening ear, what would have been your fate? The woman asked.
âI donât know ma, but Iâm grateful you did, I replied and an officer phone began to ring.
âIâm sorry I acted rashly, I was so frustrated to see my daughter this way, my mom apologized.
âIts okay, Iâm a mother too and I understand better, the woman said and my mom smiled and hugged her.
âThe full tape from the party is seen, the video we saw was the corrupted one, the officer whose phone rang reported.
âI thought as much, wise bit**hes, my brother angrily said.
âOkay, thanks and sorry for everything. Iâll be giving you update about this case from time to time, the woman said and we greeted them happily and left.
When i got home, I went straight to my room and laid down on my bed, then i remembered the terrible nights i laid on the dirty floor of the cell like a criminal. My back and everything fought to adjust to my current situation, something i wonât want to experience ever again.
The door opened and my mom walked in smiling at me and I sat up, then I saw she held a first aid box. I burst out laughing at that as she sat down beside me,
âMom why didnât you study Medicine? I asked.
âBecause i know you will, so can your doctor treat your wounds now? She asked back.
âOkay mom but first I need to take my bath first, my body hurts, I replied and she sadly nodded.
âThis will never happen again I promise you, she said.
âYes mom, Iâve learnt my lessons and i have my own experience now, i said.
âOkay, Iâll go prepare something for you to eat while you take your bath, she said.
âThanks mom, let me enjoy my bed for now, I missed it, I said falling back on it and she smiled and left.
I came out to the Dinning and ate breakfast with my family as we chatted and laughed like nothing happenedâŚ. In my stay in prison, i imagined this moments with them and was scared it may not happen again.
I was having my nap when I heard noises downstairs, I stood up and peeped again like i did when the cops came, and it was my class mates visiting.
I ran down Immediately so happy as we hugged tight,
âWe heard what happened Joan, who would have though your best friend can do that to you? One asked.
âIâm not surprised though, I never trusted that Favour when i heard her talking with a girl from the Art section about you. She said youâre claiming to be beautiful because youâre fair skinned when sheâs more beautiful with her black skin. She was jealous when you were made the school girlâs prefect, she even said you slept with teaches to get the position, I mean is that a friend? Prisca asked.
âGod forbid! A girl exclaimed.
âIâm so shocked right now, it was hard to believe, another said.
âAnd you couldnât tell me this Prisca? I asked.
âoh so easy to say now its exposed you have a friendenemy. Did you care to hear anything concerning your royal best friend? A guy asked and I heaved bowing my head.
âI didnât know how to tell you then, because you wouldnât have believed me. But Iâm glad youâre okay now, Prisca said and i nodded.
âits okay, such is life anyway. I hope the school is not aware about this? I asked and they all exchanged glances and began to laugh.
âDid i ask any thing bad? I asked confused.
âOf course yes, you think we are the only ones who knows? Favour practically testified to everyone how God saved her from the trouble you wanted heaping on her head, a girl replied and i scoffed.
âI didnât notice Favour had some mental issues, or did she? I asked.
âProbably she showed you the signs but you laughed it off, a girl replied and they laughed.
âJoan donât think about it anymore, I brought notes for you, Prisca said and i gave a little smile as we talked and had fun before they left after i promised them Iâll be resuming school soonâŚâŚâŚâŚ.

BETRAYER IN DISGUISEđ˝đ˝
Episode 7.
My legs were shaking and my hands shivering as the man brought out his phone. I almost fainted with anxiousness and the man shook his head,
âJoan put yourself together. This is the conversation when we initially questioned her with the other girls, the man said and played the recording.
âSo you are among the girls who served drinks in the party right? A man asked.
âYes, I heard Favour replied.
âOkay, and I was told a strange girl was with you, who is she? A man asked.
âShe wanted help and was expecting to have little cash when I get paid. So I agreed that she should hang around with me to serve while I pour in the drinks for her because I was tutored before the party, she replied.
âSo can you explain to me how that Man died? Because the lady with him said he didnât taste any food there, that he fell after drinking from what you girls served him, a man asked.
âAhh sir I never served, I only gave the tray to the girl which other glasses was in there, I canât kill even a fly, she replied.
âShut up then who did! If everyone is saying its not me then who did! A man angrily shouted.
âSir I donât know how to say this, Favour said.
âYou Better start saying what you know, the man said.
âSir⌠Sir ermmm though i was not sure but I think I saw Joan putting something in a glass. She said.
âWhoâs Joan? The girl? The man replied.
âYes, but she told me she wanted taking something from the glass that an insect fell in or something, she replied.
âI see and what did you do? The man asked.
âI never thought she could do such a thing sir, I wasnât expecting it, she replied.
âReally? What was her reaction when he fell? He asked.
âShe was shaking and hurriedly went home without waiting to get the pay. Besides her phone was constantly ringing which I donât know who was calling, but she left immediately the bouncers cleared the area, she replied.
âWhy should we believe what youâre saying? The man asked.
âBecause its the truth, I never trust that girl but I only wanted to help though I didnât know she will do such a thing. Maybe she had an intention already about that man that she used me to get in so she will carry out her evil act. Sheâs fond of sugar daddies, who knows what he did to her, Favour replied.
âWe are still waiting for the CCTV footage and if thereâs no truth in what you said, you all will be back here. But for now i need her address, the man said and Favour quickly called it out.
âPlease punish her for her doings, donât let her get away with it maybe it will teach her some lessons. Ahhhh Joan, why did you do this to me? I heard Favour said and began to cry.
âIts okay, will you be bold enough to testify this in court? The man asked.
Shared on whatsapp by Martino
âOf course why not? Joan is a runs girl, and she is capable of doing this. If the CCTV turns out to be what I just said, then I will testify, she replied.
There I broke down in tears that the late man wife held me from falling off from the chair.
âPlease I donât want to hear anymore, please I donât want to hear anymore, I cried on the woman and the man ended the recording.
âIâm sorry Joan, the man said.
âI cant believe this, we play together, we eat together, we share things together and this is what i get? Where did I go wrong? What did i do? I asked.
âWhat will you say if i played the recording Prisca gave to me? Do you know this bruise on your face was not an accident? It was a deliberate blow Favour gave targeting your eyes after all it would have been called accident, but God was loving enough to safe you. Thatâs the friend you were proud of, Iâm sorry Joan, the man said and i was finding it difficult to breathe.
âJoan just stop okay, I know its painful but I think its for the best. You donât trust people that much these days because we donât know the content of people hearts. Also you donât need to quarrel or do anyone wrong for the person to hate or harm you, humans sometimes are just naturally wicked that we have to be careful, the woman said.
âWhat is going to happen now? Is she the killer? I asked.
âTomorrow morning youâll be released, Iâll call your parents to come pick you up and Favour will take your place instead. She is going to vomit the truth in the hard way, donât worry about it, the man replied and i nodded.
âCan you please do me a favour? I asked.
âAnything, the man replied.
âPlease I want to be there when she will be talking, I just want to see that betrayal face of hers, I said.
âAre you sure about that? The woman asked.
âYes please, I replied.
âYou know what Joan, go take your rest and worry no more. Youâve been freed, Iâll call your parents and drop every charges, the woman said.
âThank you so much ma, thank you, I said and she tapped me as i slowly left the room back to the cell.
I laid on the foam crying bitterly as everything I shared with my best friend came playing.
I had her back now and then, and without her in school my day is ruined.
âHow could you do this to me! How could you Favour! I screamed throwing anything I saw hitting my self on the wall that the officers came running to open the Gate.
I was already bleeding on my arm but it could not be compared to the one in my heart, why is it always my friends hurting me?
The only friend I had then before meeting Favour pretended to be ill and i took her home during the break period.
I was so scared and worried for her and left to get her some tablets from the chemist.
Getting home she was not where i left her, suddenly a man entered and closed the door.
I was shocked and asked about my friend, not worried for myself.
But he told me to look for him instead and worry not for my friend for she has excused us so we can have fun.
I thought he was joking and attempted to leave, but he held me just to force me on bed.
I was just in my junior secondary 2 so very young. I screamed with every voice in me struggling with a man old enough to birth me.
Luckily a neighbor walked in and heard my screams and began hitting the door.
I was already undressed despite the hard time I gave him and he knew he couldnât do anything, he escaped through the other door and I opened up.
The woman walked in and helped me dressed and my body was reddish with scratches and how hard he pinned his fists on me.
Esther planned all along to give me out to her lustful neighbor for 3,000 naira.
My parents made sure they made them pay and changed me from the school, thatâs how i met Favour.
Though that experience with Esther made me not to interact closely with anybody, but some how Favour played her way through me and i embraced her as a friend and a sister i never had despite my mom didnât like the idea of having a best friend.
But that same friend wanted putting me in jail for a crime i didnât commit. I was treated as a criminal, separated from my parents and school just because of Favour.
The pains in my heart was just too much as i was held down so my arm can be treated.
No wonder David said in the bible,
âFor it is not an enemy who reproaches and taunts meâthen I might bear it; nor is it one who has hated me who insolently vaunts himself against meâthen I might hide from him.
But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friendâ
âAhh mom you were so very correct, Iâm sorry mom, I weakly saidâŚâŚâŚ

BETRAYER IN DISGUISEđ˝đ˝
Episode 5.
Story by Miriam Edem
The officers let go of me and I fell on the bare ground and they locked the cell back.
âHow will you treat a criminal if Iâm handled this way! I shouted on them.
âWe go soon break your mouth, one said and they left.
âAt least youâve eaten Joan, I told myself getting up but couldnât help it- I became scared with the thought of how Iâm going to escape this.
Evening came and I saw my family no where, in fact no one smelled the area but I only heard voices around.
I began to scream again but one one responded, I was totally ignored like I never existed neither was I given something to eat or drink.
It was the dawn of another day and I woke up realizing I slept off with my head bent sideways as I leaned on the wall.
My neck hurts terribly as I tried to get up and I saw the late man wife majestically walking to the gate.
âHey baby girl, had a sound rest? She asked but I couldnât reply when I was trying to endure the pains I was feeling.
âAre you ready to comply now? She asked when no one gave her a reply.
âWhere is my family? Why has no one visited me? I asked.
âOh because they did yesterday huh? What did they tell you, that you will leave this place? No baby girl, you will never escape this. Its okay they insisted to take this to court, fine I have no problem with that, but they will never see you till we get to court! She replied and my eyes bulged out.
âWhat! Youâre joking right? You cant be serious. You know its such a shame youâre wasting your energy on the wrong person when your husband killer is out thereâŚâŚ. âThen tell me the person! She shouted cutting in.
âI donât know, Figure it out yourself and let me go! Do I look like a killer to you? You all are so dumb, very dumb! I angrily shouted and she smiled.
âWow wow wow! Very brave of you darling and Iâm beginning to enjoy this, she said but I was trembling already.
âWe will see, she said and wanted to leave and I ran to the gate holding it,
âMaâam please I swear Iâm innocent, I donât know what to say anymore because Iâve exhausted all I know.
Keeping me here honestly wonât give you the answer or lead you to your husband killer because I have no idea or clue of how it happened. All i know was I served and I get the tray in public where everyone sees, how will i then poison someone i donât know? I calmly said and she stopped looking at me.
âTell me more, you were not among the girls assigned there, why were you there? She asked.
âI told them already, my friend Favour requested for my help. We do things together and she felt I should help her out there which I did. She poured the drinks for me inside the counter, while I stood outside getting the trays from her and served, I replied and she drew near to the gate.
âDid she also served? She asked.
âNo, actually she remained there, but I and the Two girls did. But the two girls poured their wine and served, while I eased the job for my friend, I replied.
âOkay, so why my husband? Can you remember anything⌠Like can you remember when you served him? Did you hold other drinks in the tray? She asked a question that has never been asked before and my head began to ring a bell as everything became clear.
âTry to remember my husband face and tell me what you know, I can help you, she said while I was still thinking.
âYes, yes, I remember serving him but he asked for the wine name and i told him i have no idea. The lady beside him took a glassâŚâŚ âSay side chick, she cut in.
âYes side chick whatever, He then asked me to serve the rest and bring him a particular drinkâŚ.. Something PariâŚ. âCampari? She cut in.
âExactly! I confirmed when I was finding it hard to remember.
âWait a minute, officer! She shouted and an officer entered.
âOpen the gate, she told him and he did.
I came out meeting her kind of confused and she gave a little smile,
âAre you telling me the truth? She asked.
âGod is my witness, I replied.
âLets talk in a Better place, she said and took me to the interrogation room and called the two officers who do question me to come around.
âSo after he asked for Campari what next? The officer who met me earlier asked.
âI went back to my friend after serving the drink I had and told her someone is requesting for Campari. But before then my friend was discussing with her cousin and her cousin asked who is requesting for the drink which i pointed at the man.
Favour told me she will look for the drink and gave me another tray which i took it and left leaving her with her cousin. When I returned her cousin already left and Favour gave me the glass of drink and asked me to check if that glass is clean. The glass wasnât filled up and I just used my index finger to clean the top but I found no dust. She told me its alright that she only wanted to confirm because Iâll be giving it to a big man, so I took it and left, I narrated and the woman looked at the officers who were just looking at me saying nothing.
âLet me see the laptop again, the woman said and it was just what I said.
âIt doesnât look like she put anything, the woman said to the officers.
âWe actually thought she knew something because she served him, they replied.
âBut did you know about this? The woman asked the officers.
âShe tried saying something like that but we thought she was playing around, one replied.
âWho testified against her by the way? The woman asked and I was very eager to know.
âIâll tell you later, the man replied and I was so disappointed.
âWhatâs your name? The woman asked me.
âJoan, I replied.
âYou know what Joan we are going to investigate on this to make sure youâre saying the truth. If thereâs any prove of truth Iâll surely compensate and apologize for the troubles. But for now youâre still going to be here but not the way you used to be. Iâll make you comfortable, give you good food while we secretly investigate on this, the woman said.
âWhat! I thought this is over already, I want to see my mom and i have to go to school I canât stay here, I said.
âLook you donât understand, someone implicated you in this case and you have to act cool so we can get that person. Isnât that what you want? The officer who met me earlier asked and I nodded.
âSo keep calm and comply with us, we will continue to act very serious but just leave it to us. We just hope before we get to the court we should get the killer so you wonât have anything to do with this case so youâll go back to your normal life, the officer said and I sadly nodded.
âCan i at least know who implicated me? I asked.
âJust relax okay, hungry? The officer asked and I nodded.
âWhat do you want? He calmly askedâŚâŚâŚ
I was given a foam and a blanket to sleep and good food to eat but I missed my family and school.
In the evening one of the officer visited but he refused telling me anything,
âUse this to keep yourself company, he said giving me novels when he was about to go.
âThank you, I said and he nodded and left.
I heaved and thanked God the tension is kind of relieved, but then who implicated me?
Could it be Favour? I asked myself as i began remembering things that happened that Friday.
Besides her cousin looks suspicious to me- her dressing and everything but Favour said thatâs a Cameronian style and we laughed shifting it aside.
âIt canât be Favour, i know she must be worried about meâŚ.But wait, why was she released when she actually poured the drinks to me? And How did the police get my address when no one knew me in the party apart from her? I asked getting up from the foam pacing aroundâŚâŚâŚ.

BETRAYER IN DISGUISEđ˝đ˝
Story by Miriam Edem
Episode 2.
The door opened as I laid on my bed and my mom slowly walked in,
âSweetheart, she called out but I didnât reply.
My head was badly aching and my eyes so teary. I felt the effect of the hit now and was having fever already. My mom held me up and dropped a first aid box on the floor,
âSweetheart you know I want the best for you, but as your mother I donât like that girl, she said and I sniffed.
âWhy mom? What has she done? Or maybe its a crime for me to have a friend right? I asked.
âNo darling, just that when I remember what that girl you called a friend did to you I donât just trust anyone else because I donât want my baby to be hurt again. Honey there are no friends, my mom said touching me.
âMom not everyone is the same, Favour is like a sister to me and sheâs definitely not like Esther. Mom can we just end this discussion already? Iâm so sick, I said and she nodded.
âOkay but please in the name of God I am begging you, avoid anywhere fight is going on whether Favour is involved or not. And I donât think youâll be going to school tomorrow, my mom said opening the box and I suddenly remembered Favour cousin.
âNo mom I have to, we are having test tomorrow, I lied and my mom heaved.
âSo it canât be missed? She asked.
âMom I can manage, but I think I need drugs and not this. My classmates treated it already in school, I said as she cut a cotton wool.
âI know but their treatment is not good enough, and donât worry your brother left already to get drugs for you. Please try to be careful so you wonât ruin your face for me, my mom saidâŚâŚâŚ..
The next day I woke up checking my face to see the bruise so obvious. I tried falling my hair to my face but it couldnât cover it up and my mom walked in.
âWhat are you doing? She asked.
âTrying to cover this up, but I canât, I replied very frustrated and she smiled dropping makeups on the table.
âSeriously? I asked and my mom laughed.
âJust a little makeup there common, she replied.
âMom Iâm going to school, I said.
âI know but its just on the affected area, I wonât let you leave the house with this face no way. So sit down and let your makeup artist do the job, she said and I rolled my eyes and sat down.
The door opened and my brother walked in,
âWhen will you ever knock before entering a lady room? My mom asked.
âWho is the lady? Is she going for a pageant? My brother asked.
âJust shut up, my mom replied concentrating on what she was doing.
âWell your Favour friend is waiting outside, he said.
âOh tell her Iâll be out soon, I said.
âTell her yourself, he said and left and I quickly took my phone but my mom took it away from me.
âStop distracting me, she sternly said and I sighed.
Soon she was done and I thanked her and hurriedly took my bag and left first.
I met with Favour outside and quickly apologized for keeping her waiting,
âWow your face is already healed or? Favour asked checking it out.
âWell my mom used makeup to do the magic, common letâs go, I replied dragging her as we were running late.
In class I reminded Favour about her cousin but she told me thereâs a change of plan,
âWhy? what happened? I asked.
âWell she said she wonât be around, but thereâs a party this night she will like us to attend. And she said I will help in serving drinks there, of course Iâll be paid something, Favour replied.
âOh I see, sadly I wonât be seeing her then, I said and she looked at me.
âWhere is that coming from? Please donât get me upset, She said.
âYou know Favour I canât go, donât stress it, I said.
âAnd why? Because youâre mommy girl huh? Tell me about it, she angrily said and I noticed Prisca was looking at us.
âKeep your voice low, I said to Favour.
âNo I wonât, and I was thinking youâll help out in the servings too, looks like Iâll be doing it on my own, Favour said.
âOn your own? But there will be others right? I asked.
âLetâs not be too sure, its a big party and we need hands but you know they wonât want to employ more handsâŚ. Greediness, Favour replied and I looked at her scratching my head.
Shared on whatsapp by Martino
She needs my help but I have a problem. My mom will bluntly refuse when Favour is involved, and thereâs no lie I can use to sneak out,
âGirlfriend please help out na, Favour said touching me and i nodded.
âIâll try my best but its not a promise, I said.
âI know you will, thanks darling. Letâs eat please Iâm starving, She said bringing out a flask.
âUhmmm what do you have today? I asked as she gave me a spoon.
âCheck it out, she said opening the flaskâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ
I got home after school and saw my mom about going out,
âWhere to now Iâm back? I asked after greeting her.
âI have to attend to a client now. Its kind of an emergency, fortunately her makeup artist disappointed her and her birthday is today, so Iâm already late. But thereâs food for you and your brother, heâs not back from lectures, she replied hurriedly arranging her makeup box.
âOkay, looks like youâll come home late today right? I asked so happy inside of me.
âErmmm I donât know yet, but take care of the house and donât forget your drugs. Okay see ya, my mom replied and left and i jumped up and ran to my room to change up.
I called up Favour telling her the good news,
âGreat, please be there by 4pm. Sorry I wonât be able to pick you up, she said.
âNo problem, till then okay, bye, I happily said and dropped the call and went through my clothes Iâll wear for tonightâŚâŚâŚ
Before leaving the house I called my brother to confirm if heâs coming back soon but he didnât pick up.
I locked the door keeping the key under the foot mat and fled to the venue.
I called up Favour and she came out meeting me dressed on cooperate,
âOh thank God youâre dressed on cooperate too, come in thereâs a lot to be done, she said dragging me in as i saw many big men and women in the society.
âWhy is your cousin in such a party anyway? I asked.
âNo questions please, Favour replied as we arrived a table where all kinds of drinks, wine and juice are.
âOkay, work starts now, Favour said and i nodded.
My phone began to ring at past 5pm and i knew my brother is back,
âFavour i need to go now, I said.
âCommon you just came and you canât leave me now na please, Favour said and I ignored the call.
âLet me have your phone please, Favour said and I gave her the phone and took a tray to go serve.
I didnât remember my phone or had any call or checked the time, all I knew was I enjoyed the party where I was with Favour partaking in the drink while we served.
But everything got interrupted when a great shout was heard at a corner.
I dropped the glass of wine and ran there with Favour and others to see a man on the floor shaking seriously.
âWhat did you give to him? Please help! A lady who was with him shouted and suddenly bouncers began clearing the area and rushed him out.
I was so frightened as the party scattered and i looked at Favour,
âWas he poisoned? I shakily asked.
âWho knows? He may be epileptic or something donât bother, she replied.
âNo please i have to go, whereâs my phone? I asked and she gave it to me.
I saw missed calls from my brother and mom and it got me more scared,
âFavour bye my mom will be so worried, I said. âOkay girlfriend, thanks for helping out, she said and I hurriedly leftâŚâŚâŚâŚ

BETRAYER IN DISGUISEđ˝đ˝
Story by Miriam Edem.
Episode 1.
The class was noisy with students scattered about, I bowed my head engrossed with my Shakespeare novel when I heard a tap on my back,
âJoan youâre here? havenât you heard? Prisca asked.
âHeard what? I asked confused and heard shouting outside.
Everyone in class got distracted as we rushed out to see my friend in a serious fight.
âJeez! What are those grown ups doing? I asked so surprised.
âI actually wanted to tell you that, Prisca replied and I immediately threw my book and ran there going into their midst.
âEnough! Its enough! I shouted struggling to tear them apart as they still attempted to throw blows.
âEnough! I shouted but got a heavy hit close to my eyes and I stood still.
Right there the fight was put to a halt as everyone concentrated on me.
âJoan are you okay? I heard voices but my head was too heavy.
I was led to sit down amidst the noises going on while my face was attended to,
âGirlfriend are you okay? Favour asked touching me and I looked at her.
âSeriously? Were you really fighting on the field like a junior student? What will the junior ones do when you just showed an example? I asked.
âYou really think I wanted it? What do you take me for? Favour asked.
âYou should have controlled yourself and give a report, look what youâve done now, I said.
âIâm sorry okay, you still look beautiful anyway, Favour said hitting me but that was not funny.
âIâll be back, some teachers want to see me, Favour said getting up beside me.
âAlright, but be careful with your speech okay, I said and she nodded and ran off.
âThereâs no way you wonât have bruises, thatâs the disadvantage of having a light complexion, Prisca said giving me a mirror to look at my face.
âGod, its so bad, what will i tell my mom? I asked.
âsimple, you went into the middle of two elephants fighting, what did you expect? Another replied and i heaved.
âThat was my best friend out there and i was so scared, you donât expect me to watch her without doing anything, I said.
âOh I forgot when I comes to Favour no one has a say, but look sheâs fine and youâre the one with the black eye, who lose? Another student asked.
âIt was an accident, no one wanted this to happen right? Please Iâm having headache already, I replied touching my forehead.
âIts alright, looks like tomorrow youâll be coming to school with a sunshade. Youâre the senior prefect after all, Prisca said and i smiled.
âAnd why? I asked.
âYou look like a punch bag sorry, by tomorrow you will need a sunshade trust me, another replied with a smirking face
âThatâs harsh, Prisca said to her and a teacher approached us.
We greeted him and he saw my face,
âSo its true then, what if you got hit in a bad place? The teacher asked.
âIt was an accident, I replied.
âStill you shouldnât have gone into it, the teacher said.
âThat was my friend sir, I said.
âFavour can take care of herself and you know that, he said.
âTell her for us, the girls around concurred and i bowed my head.
âHas it been treated? The teacher asked.
âYes, we used the first aid, Prisca replied.
âGood, Iâll go get you drugs for pain relief, the teacher said.
âNo sir, I donât take drugs and my mom can handle this, I stopped him.
âAre you sure? He asked and i nodded.
âThen you Better start going home, the teacher said.
âI have to wait for Favour we go home together and she is not back yet, I said and he smiled.
âAlright then, make sure you take care of your eyes okay, he said and left while the girls looked at me quietly.
âWhat? I asked confused.
Prisca wanted replying but I saw Favour coming,
âOh sheâs here, I said cutting Prisca and stood up to meet her.
âHey how did it go? I asked.
âNothing much, they only showed their disappointment thatâs all, Favour replied.
âOkay I thought as much, Iâll be going home now, I said.
âOkay letâs go take our bags, Favour said and we held hands walking back while she teased me about my face.
On the way home Favour picked a call and shouted so excited,
âHey are you serious? Iâll be there tomorrow for sure! She shouted while I smiled wondering who she is talking to.
âOkay expect me tomorrow and I hope you brought something for me? She asked.
âIâll be there tomorrow okay, welcome, she said and dropped the call.
âWhoâs in town? I asked.
âMy cousin o my very favorite, she just landed from Cameroon, Favour replied.
âReally, so youâll be seeing her tomorrow? I asked.
âSure and we are going together, Favour replied.
âWith my face? Oh no, I said.
âWhy nau? Is it not the same face you are using to walk on the road? Please you will escort me o or else I wonât go, Favour said with a frown that made me laughed.
âOkay fine but I wonât stay long okay, I accepted and she smiled crossing her hands on me as she talked more of her cousin.
I got home, and the first thing everyone saw was my eyes.
My mom practically stood up from where she sat to touch my face as I walked in,
âJoan, what is this na? My mom asked turning my face clockwise and anticlockwise.
âMom easy please, it hurts, I said keeping her hands down and sat down.
âWhat do you mean by that? Who did this to you? My mom seriously asked.
âMom it was an accident, I replied.
âAcci what? You got hit by a car? My senior brother asked.
âNo, but got into a fightâŚâŚ.. âWhat! My mom cut in.
âNo let me finish, it wasnât me⌠Like i wasnât fighting I only wanted to separate FavourâŚâŚ. âFavour again? My mom asked interrupting me and I heaved.
âJoan are you counting at all? How many times has this girl put you in the face of danger? My mom asked.
âMom what face of danger are you talking about? Arenât you happy i only have one friend? It wasnât her fault anyway I gat this black eye, I replied.
âBut you went into the fight because of her, my senior bro said.
âI am the school prefect, I am to stop the fight, I said.
âOh tell me about It, did they also have a black eye? Sweetheart if this your prefect of a post will make you lose an eye then to hell with it! My mom shouted and i rolled my eyes.
âMom Iâm seriously having headache, your shouts isnât helping matters here, I said.
âAnd you are not helping matters too, stop going out with that girl! My mom shouted on my face and i closed my eyes and nodded.
âIâll be in my room, I said taking my bag and slowly leftâŚâŚâŚâŚ..

MISS GRACE
A Short Story
Disclaimer: 18+ content. Contains explicit scenes.
I bobbed to the music bursting through my ears as I walked to Miss Graceâs office. I thought of different excuses to give for missing her quiz. The excuses that I came up with were not credible enough to let her give me a makeup test. During my four years in the university, I had never missed a class. This was the first time I missed one, and I also happened to miss a quiz.
I wondered if she would listen to me. Miss Grace was said to be one of the most difficult lecturers to deal with in the department. We suspected that it was frustration from her singlehood.
I acknowledged the greeting of one of the students standing in front of Doctor Nwekeâs office. There were always students clustered in front of his door like they were guarding him. I believed that he derived a sick pleasure from seeing students standing there.
According to the rules posted on the notice board at the entrance of the department, students were not allowed to linger around lecturersâ offices. Of course, that rule was totally disregarded by the students, not because they loved breaking school rules. No one loved standing by the corridors, wasting precious time that could have been used to do something else. Rather, it was because there was always a need to linger around. If you didnât, you would have to wait for another time before you met the lecturer you wanted to see. If all lecturers kept to the timetable, it would have been easier for all the students. At least, you were sure that if you go at this particular time, you would surely meet the lecturer. Instead, one had to get in touch with the course representatives of different classes before deciding when to go and wait for the lecturer.
âDid Mr Nweke say he is going to teach you today?â The answer was usually âNo.â
âWhen did he say he would teach you?â The answer usually bordered along the lines of âHe said he might come next week Tuesdayâ or âHe didnât say anything.â
This week Tuesday, you were waiting in front of his office, with the hope that he would come to school. If you were lucky, he would be in school that day. But there was a bigger chance that you wouldnât see him that Tuesday or the next Tuesday.
Miss Graceâs office was beside that of Mr Nweke. Unlike the weary soldiers standing in front of Mr Nwekeâs office, nobody was standing in front of her office. I knocked on the door and opened the door.
âGood afternoon ma,â I stood by the door and waited for her invitation to go in.
She looked up from what she was doing and waved me in.
I closed the door behind me and went in.
âGood afternoon ma,â I repeated.
âYou can sit down,â she said.
âThank you ma,â I sat down carefully.
âSo, any problem?â She closed the book she had been reading and looked up at me, âOh, Gideon? You missed my quiz last week?â
âYes ma,â I said unsure of which excuse to give her.
She looked at me expectantly.
I took it as a cue to give my excuse. âMa, hmm⌠I had to âŚerm⌠I had to travel to-â
â-your village because your grandfather died. Or is it your granduncle?â she interposed.
âNo ma, itâs not like that.â I hadnât even finished talking and she knew what I was about to say.
âI see students like you every day. Itâs either their grandparents that died or their uncle, some even go as far as cursing their parents. That excuse is redundant. It cannot fool me,â she said.
My heart sank in trepidation. I could only resort to begging, âMa, I am very sorry. It wasnât my intention to miss the class.â
âYes, I know that. You are one of the most intelligent students in your class and the most serious one. I was quite surprised when I checked the attendance and saw that you were among the students that missed that class. And to think it was when I decided to give a surprise quiz,â she shook her head in disappointment.
âMa,â I couldnât give up. Although it was a surprise quiz, it had also been an open one. It was part of our continuous assessment taking up about 20 marks. I couldnât miss that opportunity to increase my GPA. If I missed 20 marks, that was equivalent to losing my chance at getting an A or a B in the course, because of course, the exams were about 70 marks and no matter how intelligent I was, it was almost impossible for me to get 70 or even 69, even 60 would be a blessing to me in this regard.
She opened her drawer and brought out some documents, âTake these documents for me to the secretaryâs office. When you come back, I will see what I can do about your case.â
Relieved, I took the papers from her. I was sure that when I came back she would give me the make-up quiz. Thank God, I read, I thought as I almost jogged to the department office.
In no time, I was back in front of her office. Imagine my surprise, when I knocked on her door and got no reply.
âShe has gone,â a student standing near the office told me.
âEh?â I looked at him with a frown. âBut she was here a few moments ago.â
âShe just left now,â he said as though it was a normal thing. No, it was indeed normal. This was no new occurrence.
âShe sent me on an errand. Are you sure she has gone? Like, you saw her leaving with her bag and her car keys?â I looked at him.
âAh, guy, they tell you say person no dey and you no wan believe. If you like stay there and keep waiting,â another person cut in.
I found it hard to believe. This was someone who promised to review my case when I come back, why would she disappear all of a sudden. What was I supposed to do? I had always heard of it, but this was the first time that I was experiencing it. This was something no student wanted to experience. Once you got into this kind of yawa with lecturers, it was difficult to extricate yourself out of it.
The next day as early as 8 am, I was already standing in front of her office. I was not ready to miss any chance. Well, if only things worked out the way my simple mind had imagined. 9 am passed and there was no sign of the slim-bodied, fair teacher. 10 am, my legs were already getting tired but my âwillâ was strong enough to keep me waiting.
11 am, still no sign of Miss Grace.
By noon, my stomach had joined my legs in the protest against waiting for Miss Grace. Well, my âwillâ was still strong, and so I stood for another one hour. My âwillâ soon gave up. She wasnât going to come. I dragged my tired and hungry self to the faculty canteen.
We had another class by 2 pm and I wasnât sure if my poor brain could stand a 2-hour lecture after the stress of standing in front of an empty office. For the first time, I wished a lecturer would miss his class. I was always among the students who complained whenever a lecturer missed his class and sometimes even threatened to write a letter to the school board reporting the lecturer. Funny how situations can change our opinions.
After a satisfying meal of jollof rice which I had downed with a chilled bottle of Sprite, I went to the class.
When the course rep announced that class had been shifted to the next day, I could hardly conceal that feeling of delight that filled my mind. That was until the thought of Miss Grace crept into my mind. I debated between going home and waiting for Miss Grace. The good student in me won, and I found myself right back in front of her office.
This time, I didnât have to wait for long. Some minutes past three, I saw her, leather bag clutched in one hand as she answered a call. She moved carefully, placing one leg in front of the other. I willed her to move fast, to realize that someone was waiting for her.
After ages, she finally got to her office.
âGood afternoon ma,â I greeted hiding my dissatisfaction.
âOh!â she looked surprised to see me, âGideon? Why are you waiting in front of my office? I hope there is nothing wrong?â
I blinked. What was going on? Had she forgotten that I met her yesterday?
âMa, itâs about the quiz.â
âIâm so sorry. I totally forgot. Something came up, so I had to leave school early,â she apologized. If I was new to Nigerian lecturers, I would have believed her.
She opened her office. I followed her in.
âYou donât have a lecture today?â she said as she opened up the curtains and switched on the AC.
âWe were supposed to have Mr Okwe today, but he shifted his class till next week,â I said drily and sat down without waiting for her invitation.
She noticed my action but said nothing. I took in a deep breath of the cold air coming from the AC, a reprieve from the heat I had endured standing outside.
âCan you help me buy a drink from the canteen?â She settled down opposite me on her leather chair.
I wanted to say no on instinct, but I remembered that I was at her mercy now, so I grudgingly stood up, taking the money from her. I made it a point to leave my bag in her office with the hope that she wouldnât disappear on me again. I was tired, but I made it back to her office in record time.
âThank you,â she muttered taking the chilled bottle of Fanta from my hand.
I sat down. And waited for her to address the problem that brought me to her office.
âIâm going to give you the chance at the makeup test,â she said. âBut, not without you giving me something.â
The excitement that her first statement that her first statement brought, was doused by her second sentence. How much did I have to give? I never had to pay for my grades, not even when I got an E in French when we were in Year 1. A lot of my coursemates paid to get an A or B, but I couldnât bring myself to do it. This was different, this was a departmental course, a 3 credit load course. French, an elective, only carried a credit load.
I brought out the four thousand naira I had withdrawn on my way to school that morning. The money I planned to use to buy a pair of new shoes. I stretched my hand to give her the money, âMa, is this enough?â
She looked at the money and shook her head, âI donât need your money. Do I look like I need that?â She stood up from her table and walked around it to the door. She locked the door and closed the curtains. Then walked towards me.
I froze as she sat on my legs and put her hands around my neck. My chest swelled as the scent of her perfume evaded my nose.
âMa,â I pushed her away. âThis is wrong.â
âDonât you want to take the makeup quiz?â she raised her brows and pulled me up.
She kissed me, blocking out what I wanted to say.
âJust kiss me,â she said grinding her waist against my laps.
I didnât want to. But with all her twining and touching, I couldnât control the lust that overcame me. And so, I did as she said. I kissed her. I took her in the office, the cold air of the AC sharp against the flesh of my buttocks, her skirt bunched at her waist. And when we were done, the smell of our act filled the office.
I was filled with a sense of shame when I finally realized what I had done. I had sex with my lecturer so that she could give me a makeup quiz. Not an A or a B, but the chance at another quiz. I couldnât even lift my face to meet her.
I felt her hand on my shoulder, âI didnât do this for the quiz.â
I stilled, then why? I thought. Why let me do this?
She put her hands around my waist and rested her head on my back, âI will let you write the quiz. I can give you an A if you want, without the quiz. But you have to⌠this thing between us, I want it to continue.â
âWhat difference does it make? Isnât it the same? I had sex with you to get a better grade.â My mouth was dry. I just wanted to go home and wipe out the evidence of this sin.
âThis is the first time that I am sleeping with a student. I am not like other lecturers. Itâs just that this time, I⌠I felt really desperate. And when you came yesterday, I just had this thought. Iâm single, Iâm lonely. Forget about sleeping with me for grades, I just need a male companion for now,â she explained. She let go of me and returned to her seat.
âI am your student,â I reminded her.
âNext year you wouldnât be,â she countered.
âYou are older than me. And I may have a girlfriend. What makes you so certain that I would listen to what you say?â
âBut you will, wonât you?â she smirked at me. âI can make it so that I will be your supervisor for your final year project. I am the course adviser for this department, in case you forgot,â she was smirking at me.
âI can report you,â I tried weakly. I knew she already had me. More than the grades, I was more interested in placing my hands on her supple breasts, pumping my seed into her, listening to the soft moans that escaped from her mouth even though she tried to remain quiet. I could also see it in her eyes. She wanted this and she wasnât going to give up until she got it.
She only smiled at me. âAre you in or not?â
âDo I have any other option?â I said drily.
I watched as a smile spread on her face and she stood up again, this time pulling off her blouse.
I was aware of the wrongness of it, but I was at a point of no return.
The end.
