FG To End Petrol Subsidy June 2022, World Bank Condemns N2.9tn Funding
~1.2 mins read
The World Bank has decried the continued spending by the Nigerian government on petrol subsidy, which it said is on track to gobble up N2.9tn this year.

Its Country Director for Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri, who spoke on Monday at a panel session during the 27th National Economic Summit, said the country could channel the money being spent on subsidy to primary healthcare, basic education and rural roads.

“This year, Nigeria is on track to spend N2.9tn on PMS subsidy, which is more than it spends on health,” he said.

Also speaking at the session, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the Federal Government had made provision for petrol subsidy till the end of June next year.

“In our 2022 budget, we only factored in subsidy for the first half of the year; the second half of the year, we are looking at complete deregulation of the sector, saving foreign exchange and potentially earning more from the oil and gas industry,” she said.

The World Bank director, who likened Nigeria to a malnourished individual needing urgent treatment, said some critical decisions need to be made now for the country to realise its potential.

He said, “I think the urgency of doing something now is because the time is going in terms of retaining the hope of young Nigerians in the future and potential of Nigeria. The kinds of things that could be done right away – the petrol subsidy; yes, I hear that six months from now, perhaps with the PIA(Petroleum Industry Act) coming into effect, this will go away.

$148m Consultants’ Pay: Buhari, Govs Meet, Oct Revenue Sharing Suspended
~1.1 mins read
There were strong indications on Monday that state governors would soon meet with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over the Federal Government’s decision to debit local government accounts.

The governors decided to meet the President after Friday’s Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting ended in a deadlock following the states’ opposition to the commencement of deduction of $418m from the local governments’ accounts to pay private consultants for the Paris Club refund.

It was learnt that commissioners of finance had briefed the governors and that the states would take up the matter with the President last week.

A top official of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, who confided in one of our correspondents, said, “The governors’ meeting with the President is expected to hold this week, because of the urgency of the matter. Without the allocation, the states cannot pay salaries.”

The states were irked at Friday’s last meeting when they were informed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance that deductions from local governments’ allocations had started in order to pay the Paris Club consultants.

The Federal Government had in 2006 paid $12bn to get an $18bn debt write-off by the Paris Club of international creditors.

After realising that the payment was made directly from the revenue accruing to the entire federation, states and local governments that did not owe the Paris Club demanded a refund.

High Protein Diets: Good Or Bad?
~1.7 mins read
High-protein, low-carb diets are appealing to many people, especially to meat lovers who envision filling up on high-protein snacks and foods like bacon, steak, cheese, and nuts.
What is organic food in the first place?

Popular High-Protein Diets

  • Atkins Diet
  • Zone Diet
  • Sugar Busters
  • Protein Power
  • South Beach Diet
  • While high-protein diets can work for some people, it's important to consider the risks and benefits before embarking on any diet.

    Low-Carb Diets Vs. High-Protein Diets

The most popular high-protein diets, like the Atkins diet, have encouraged dieters to eat foods that are both low-carb and high-protein. However, more recent ketone diets suggest eating very few carbohydrates while consuming normal amounts of protein.

    How Much Protein?

A typical American diet is made up of 12%-18% of calories from proteins. High-protein diets suggest increasing these amounts to near double the percentage. In fact, in these diets, half your daily calories may come from sources of protein such as eggs, cheese, and meat. High-protein weight loss plans suggest dramatically restricting your consumption of grains, starches, fruits, and cereals.

    What Is Ketosis?

In the absence of dietary carbohydrates (less than 50g/day) the body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis. In normal metabolic processes, the body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose used to fuel cellular metabolism, providing energy to cells. The brain in particular requires these glucose molecules to function. In the absence of dietary carbs as a source of glucose, the body diverts to ketosis for replacement molecules.

In ketosis, the liver derives ketones from fat (stored or from food) to provide much needed fuel to brain cells. Ketosis is one of the body’s defenses against starvation as a way to feed the brain when quality food is scarce.

    Ketone "Ketosis" Diets

Ketone dieters force their bodies into ketosis to burn fat and fuel their brains using fats (ketones) and not sugars (glucose). By reducing a dietary intake of less than 50 mg of carbohydrates per day, ketosis can be achieved. This high protein diet meal plan has many side effects and can impact underlying health conditions. Speak with a physician before making any dramatic dietary changes.

    7 Riskiest Workout
    ~1.3 mins read
Who has time to waste on ineffective, risky exercises? Not you. So ditch these seven moves that won't deliver the results you want -- and may even cause injury
     Lat Pull-down Behind the Head
The problem: Only people with very mobile shoulder joints can keep their spines straight enough to do this exercise properly. So the move — done wrong — can lead to several complications including shoulder impingement or worse, a tear in the rotator cuff. And if the bar hits the back of the neck, it could injure cervical vertebrae
    A Safer Lat Pull-down
On the pull–down machine, lean back a few degrees, use a wider–than–shoulder grip, and bring the bar down in front of your body to the breastbone, pulling shoulder blades down and together. Contract your abdominals to stabilize the body, and avoid using momentum to swing the bar up and down. The lat pull–down works both lower and upper back muscles.
    Military Press Behind the Head
This shoulder move, in which you lift a barbell up and down behind the head, can cause the same problems as the lat pull–down behind the head.
    A Safer Military Press
A safer shoulder alternative: When doing the military press, keep the bar in front of your head. Stand with the weight no lower than the collarbone and keep your upper body upright. The exercise can also be done seated. Always sit straight against a back support, and keep the natural curve in your spine, with upper back and glutes pressed to the chair.
    Upright Row
The problem: Pulling weights, a barbell, or a weighted cabled bar up under your chin can compress the nerves in the shoulder area.
Safer Alternative to the Upright Row
Instead of doing an upright row, work your shoulders with a front or lateral shoulder raise, lifting weights out to the front or side of the body. Keep a slight bend in your arms.

    Fitness At Any Age
    ~2.8 mins read

Energize Your Life! Who said physical activity is all work and no play? In fact, it can be just the opposite! There is no need to think of strenuous workouts that are painful and boring. Instead, imagine doing fun physical activities you enjoy and look forward to. Do physical activity for enjoyment and watch the health benefits follow!

    The importance of physical activity

The evidence is growing and is more convincing than ever! People of all ages who are generally inactive can improve their health and well-being by becoming active at a moderate-intensity on a regular basis.

Regular physical activity substantially reduces the risk of dying of coronary heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death, and decreases the risk for strokecolon cancerdiabetes, and high blood pressure. It also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications. Moreover, physical activity need not be strenuous to be beneficial; people of all ages benefit from participating in regular, moderate-intensity physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five or more times a week.

Despite the proven benefits of physical activity, more than 50% of American adults do not get enough physical activity to provide health benefits. 25% of adults are not active at all in their leisure time. Activity decreases with age and is less common among women than men and among those with lower income and less education.

Insufficient physical activity is not limited to adults. More than a third of young people in grades 9-12 do not regularly engage in vigorous-intensity physical activity.

This section explains why you should be active, how inactivity may hurt your health, and how physical activity can benefit everyone.

    Why should I be active?

"It's easier to maintain your health than regain it." -Dr. Ken Cooper

Physical activity can bring you many health benefits. People who enjoy participating in moderate-intensity or vigorous-intensity physical activity on a regular basis benefit by lowering their risk of developing coronary heart diseasestroke, non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitushigh blood pressure, and colon cancer by 30-50% (USDHHS, 1996). Additionally, active people have lower premature death rates than people who are the least active.

Regular physical activity can improve health and reduce the risk of premature death in the following ways:

  • Reduces the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) and the risk of dying from CHD
  • Reduces the risk of stroke
  • Reduces the risk of having a second heart attack in people who have already had one heart attack
  • Lowers both total blood cholesterol and triglycerides and increases high-density lipoproteins (HDL or the "good" cholesterol)
  • Lowers the risk of developing high blood pressure
  • Helps reduce blood pressure in people who already have hypertension
  • Lowers the risk of developing non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitus
  • Reduces the risk of developing colon cancer
  • Helps people achieve and maintain a healthy body weight
  • Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety
  • Promotes psychological well-being and reduces feelings of stress
  • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
  • Helps older adults become stronger and better able to move about without falling or becoming excessively fatigued
  • Can a lack of physical activity hurt your health? Evidence shows that those who are not physically active are definitely not helping their health, and may likely be hurting it. The closer we look at the health risks associated with a lack of physical activity, the more convincing it is that Americans who are not yet regularly physically active should become active.

Do You Need A Tetanus Shot?
    ~0.9 mins read

    What is tetanus?

Tetanus, sometimes called lockjaw, is a rare disease caused by bacteria known as Clostridium tetani. A toxin produced by the bacteria affects the function of the nerves and leads to severe muscle spasms in the abdomen, neck, stomach, and extremities.

  • Tetanus can either be localized to one part of the body or generalized, with muscle spasms throughout the body.
  • The disease has been called lockjaw since the muscle spasms in the face and neck can lead to the inability to open the mouth, and this is one of the most common symptoms of tetanus.
  • Tetanus is a serious illness that is fatal in up to 30% of cases.
  • The bacteria that cause tetanus can be found in soil, manure, or dust. They infect humans by entering the body through cuts or puncture wounds, particularly when the wound area is dirty. Animal bites, burns, and non-sterile injection of drugs can also lead to infection with Clostridium tetani. The first symptoms of tetanus can appear any time from 3 days to weeks after infection, but the average time until symptom onset is 8 days. Tetanus is not contagious, so you cannot acquire the disease from someone who has it.
