I Was So Broke When I Left Office, It Was My Staff Who Gave Me Their Allowances- Gowon (Throwback).
General Yakubu Gowon is a Nigerian Politician and military leader who was born born on October 19, 1934 in Plateau State. The Military Leader served as the Head of States of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. Yakubu Gowon is a very respected politician in Nigeria who has been at the helms of affair in ensuring Nigeria is govern by good leaders. The utterance of a UK Parliamentarian yesterday however raised some dust as he said Yakubu Gowon took half of CBN to London during a plenary session on the Lekki Toll Gate killing on October 20, 2020.
It is wise to reflect on what General Yakubu Gowon said two years ago on the issues affecting Nigeria as a country. Gowon said that himself and his officers did not indulge in corruption while in office as a Head of State from 1966 to 1975 and that he expected other Nigerian leaders after him to emulate what he did while in office. General Gowon who left office on July 29, 1975 said that he had nothing apart from his salaries as of the time he left and that everything they had then belonged to the country and to the people, adding that he did not touch anything.
General Yakubu Gowon expressed sadness on the media who often rub corruption on past leaders as he said that it is wrong to see reports that all the former Heads of States are thieves.
Lekki Shooting: After her interview with CNN, See what DJ Switch said again that got people reacting.
Barely a week after DJ Switch's interview with CNN where she made some statement against those who are trying to cover up the alleged Lekki massacre, she shared another tweet against another top Nigeria politician.
Recall DJ Switch was tagged as the hero of the October 20th incident, she was the brave hero who streamed the shooting live on IG and share to the world what was happening at Lekki toll gate.
Today, CNN upload another update on the shooting as they shared video analysis on their investigation on the Lekki Toll gate Massacre. CNN has been one of the top media house who has brought up evidence that the Lekki Toll gate incident was real.
In the CNN video, the cable network analysis how they came up with their investigation with really time stamp, they also shared how the Nigerian Army have denied and twisted their story concerning the Lekki shooting. After CNN was threatened of sanction by Lai Mohammed, they demand the government to provide real evidence of the shooting as they are sure their investigation was accurate.
Various reactions have continued to trail an allegation made by Tom Tugendhat (Tonbridge and Malling), a UK parliament member on Monday, November 23 during the House deliberation on the aftermath of the EndSARS protest, and possible sanctions to be meted on top Nigerians regarding the roles they played in the killing of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate.
During the deliberation, he had said, “What we are seeing in Nigeria today is part of that story. It is a tragedy we are all witnessing because we see things falling apart. The problem this time is not foreign pressure known as colonialism. The pressure instead is corruption and violence and attempts at control (of power)."
Going further, he had said, “We need to call out the corruption, we need to use the powers that we have in this country to stop those who are profiting from the wealth of that great nation and hiding it here. Now some people will remember when general Gowon left Nigeria, he took half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London."
This claim has expectedly necessitated various reactions from Nigerians. While many believe that General Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian Head of State isn't capable of engaging in a corrupt act of that magnitude, many others expressed shock at the claim, but believed it shows that all Nigerian leaders are corrupt, even the supposedly incorruptible ones.
Reacting to the news, a former Senator of the Republic of Nigeria, Senator Shehu Sanni has taken to his Twitter account to give his take on the damning claim. According to him, the claim was a fake one owing to the meagre lifestyle exhibited by the former Nigerian Head of State since he exited power and over 40 years later.
In the tweet, he had written, "General Yakubu Gowon; The claim of ‘looting the CBN’ made by the British Minister for Africa as represented by Mr James Duddridge against Gen Gowon is nothing but outright falsehood.Gowon exited power without any evidence of wealth & that remains, for over four decades after power."
What made the claim a particularly damning one is the fact that General Yakubu Gowon is seen by many Nigerians as a beacon of integrity who has not used public fund to enrich himself. However, that popular belief is being questioned and put to test and it remains to be seen what will happen next.
To you my dear readers, how do you see this defense of General Yakubu Gowon put up by Senator Shehu Sanni?
