Zimbabwe Government Thwarts Planned Protest
~7.7 mins read

When Robert Mugabe was ousted as president of Zimbabwe in a coup, many in the country hoped for an end to the repression and mismanagement that had characterized his 37 years in office.

But when protesters tried to gather on Friday in the capital, Harare, the security services reacted in a manner reminiscent of the Mugabe era. They shut down most of the city, arrested several government critics and forced more than a dozen others into hiding — highlighting how the country has, in the eyes of the opposition, slipped from bad to worse under Mr. Mugabe’s successor, president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mr. Mnangagwa took power on a promise of renewal, but his critics associate him with the same excesses that defined Mr. Mugabe’s legacy: authoritarian rule, financial missteps, rampant graft, plummeting living standard and a teetering economy.

“In reality, there is nothing new,” said Obey Sithole, a leading opposition campaigner who went into hiding days before the planned protests. “Instead, we have seen the perfection of the art of repression.”

And the government’s halting response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has exposed the awful state of the country’s health care system and led to further allegations of corruption, has fueled widespread anger.

3 Avoidable Mistakes That May Affect Akeredolu's Re-election.
~6.3 mins read

As the road to Alagbaka government house get bumpy and undulating, politicians who are sojourning the road are expected to alight at the various destination on Saturday.

The people will go to poll to decide who takes over the affairs of the state for another four years. In the Nigeria context, a sitting governor who is seeking a second term in office is usually expected to have an edge over his co-contestants.

This is due to the incumbent advantage and closeness to the people of the state. It is even more advantageous when the governor belongs to the ruling party at the federal level just like the present situation with governor Rotimi Akeredolu who is seeking re-elction under the All Progressive Congress.

But there are certain factors currently threatening the chance of the governor and going by the political ringtone across the state, it will be save to conclude that governor Rotimi Akeredolu is already on his way out of government house come Saturday.

These three mistakes appears to be the pillar on which the electorates are building their voting decision on and except something unusual happens on election day, they are likely to hunt him down politically.

1. Latest Reduction of school fees in higher institutions

In the early days of his administration, Governor Akeredolu increased tuition fees of the state-owned institutions which triggered a public outrage and unrest across the state.

Security operatives were unleashed on the harmless and helpless students who trooped out to protest the increment. Many students were shot and ended in the hospital while others were put behind bars even with their parents who joined them to condemn the anti-people's decision.

While giving his reason for the increment, Governor Akeredolu insisted that the state does not have the resources to run the institutions effectively and the students will need to pay double of their normal fees to maintain the status quo of the institutions.

But to the surprise of many, the governor made a u-turn after two years of increasing the tuitions by reducing it to the amount he initially claimed impossible to run the schools with.

This latest decision was taken in the heat of electioneering campaign. According to him, he decided to reduce the tuitions due to the economic hardship caused by covid-19 pandemic.

But many are of the opinion that the governor reversed his decision in order to hoodwink electorates ahead of October 10.

This has been described as the height of desparation by the governor who may likely return the tuitions to the normal exorbitant rate after he must have won the election.

This is currently the issue among students of higher institutions and their parents in the State. It is a big mistake the governor could have ordinarily avoided by not reducing the tuitions and simply sticks to the old order.

2. Failure to pay workers entitlement

Ondo state workers are currently not happy with the governor. Although, he has not owed them any salary since he takes over from his predecessor, Segun Mimiko who left a legacy of 6- month salary arrears for him.

But government is said to be continuity and the workers are not ready to buy into the excuse that he is offsetting the inherited debt which affects the payment of their emoluments.

During the October 1st celebration of 2019, the governor carelessly told the workers that they can protest if they wanted to. The statement became a major issue that nearly landed him in trouble with the workers.

Till date, workers are still agitating for the emoluments and they are already threatening to downtool even at this critical time of electoral process.

If the government had placed priority on the workers welfare before now, there would not have been this controversy threatening his re-elction.

3. Involvement of family in the administration of state

If there is anything that has been a matter of concern to the people of the state, it is the involvement of Aketi's family in the administration of Ondo state.

His wife who is the first lady is said to be very powerful and involve in most of the decision making process of the state. She controls the ministry of women affairs. She has her tentacles in various all aspects of government.

Her relatives from Imo state allegedly get majority of the juicy contracts in the state. Some of them were appointed as SA and SSA to the governor.

His son, Babajide Akeredolu is also a major force in the government. He has been severally accused of owning the firm that does all financial transactions in the state including payment of workers salary and get his commision every month.

Babajide is the secretary of covid-19 fund raising Committee in the State. There are other accusation levelled against the Govenor bothering on the running of state on the tripod of his friends families and wife relation.

All these will speak volume either for or against his re-elction on Saturday.

IGP Orders AIGs, CPS To Sack, Prosecute Errant Cops

IGP Orders AIGs, CPS To Sack, Prosecute Errant Cops

• IG not sincere with SARS reform , says Falana

the Inspector-General of Police , Mohammed Adamu, has ordered Assistant Inspectors-General in charge of zonal commands and state Commissioners of Police to arrest , detain and dismiss from service any cop , who violates the rights of the citizens.
He said the errant operatives should also be charged after being indicted in an orderly room trial.

The IG also directed the officers to compile recent cases of abuse of power and violation of rights of the citizens by the Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad, Special Tactical Squad, Intelligence Response Team, Anti- Cultism Squad and other teams , and forward same to his office not later than Friday.

The returns are to include the dates and venues of the incident , the special teams involved , details of the incidents and personnel involved , and the actions initiated by the head of the concerned commands as well as the status of the matter .

Adamu gave the directive in a letter dated October 5, 2020 , titled, ‘ Order and directives: Restrictions on the operations of F- SARS , SARS , IRT, STS, state anti- kidnapping units and other special units under any nomenclature that operates in mufti across all formation , zones and state commands ’.

The order with reference cb :4001 /IGP .SEC / ABJ/ V. 115/ 911, stated , “ Any police personnel that , henceforth , abuses his or her powers in a manner that degrades , endangers or threatens the lives and other fundamental rights of the citizens shall be promptly arrested, processed through our internal disciplinary machinery, and if found culpable, shall be dismissed from service .

“ In addition, such personnel could be charged in consonance with their level of criminal liability in the instance. ”

The letter further directed the CP X - Squad, Force Provost Marshall and IGP Monitoring Unit to immediately coordinate and deploy joint teams to enforce the order across all the 36 state commands and the Federal Capital Territory .

“ Any personnel of the special units found violating the order must be arrested and escorted to the Force headquarters for appropriate actions . Weekly update on this operation must be forwarded to the office of the Inspector-General of Police for review and appropriate directives ,” it added.

The police boss noted that the unprofessional activities of some special operatives had continued to drag the Force into acts that “ pit us against the citizens that we were engaged, paid and statutorily obligated to serve and protect . ”

Adamu said some cops had been violating citizens’ rights in utter disregard for consistent warnings , previous orders, their professional training , international protocols, constitutional dictates , force policies, and ethical standards .

He added that no component of laws or international protocols authorised the unlawful killing or degrading treatment of fellow citizens, stressing that no element of professional training or ethical standards permitted any police personnel to deploy lethal weapons either consciously or otherwise , except as provided for in the statutes and in Force Order 237 .

“ Unfortunately , all the recent incidents of abuse of police powers violated these provisions, ” the IG lamented.

The letter reinforced the extant Force Accountability Policy , which holds officer professionally and criminally liable for the consequences of their actions .

It noted that the operational deployment of the special squads was to be limited to specific security breaches , including armed robbery , kidnapping or other violent incidents , and in such instance, they must be expressly authorised by the appropriate police authority .

Meanwhile , the Chairman , Alliance for the Survival of COVID- 19 and Beyond, Mr Femi Falana , SAN, has said the Federal Government and the IG are not sincere with his latest ban of the SARS .

A statement titled: ‘FG not sincere on SARS reform ’, by ASCAB and signed by Falana on Tuesday , said it was not the first time the police high command would issue such orders banning the squad .

He said each time they were banned, the repressive operatives always return to the streets to torment the people .

He lamented that the gross violation of human rights was linked to SARS and that a change of structure without fundamental change of the operatives of the structure would soon make the problem to reoccur.

Falana stated , “ The police high command has banned SARS several times. It has become a ritual .

“ SARS continues to operative under different names or structures . What we see is like removing sour wine and putting it in the same old, rusty bottles.
“ Nothing remarkable has changed in the police command structure that aids all forms of repression and extra- judicial killings.”

He recalled that there was public outcry in 2018 against indiscriminate arrest and detention, extortion and extrajudicial killings as well as other horrendous human rights abuse perpetrated by the SARS operatives.

He said the Federal Government responded by setting up a presidential panel of enquiry to investigate all complaints of human rights abuse .

The lawyer noted that many Nigerians submitted reports and memoranda and gave clear evidence of police abuse, but the recommendations had yet to be implemented.
