What Chemistry Is And What Chemists Do
~6.7 mins read
Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the interactions between them. This is also the definition for physics, by the way. Chemistry and physics are specializations of physical science. Chemistry tends to focus on the properties of substances and the interactions between different types of matter, particularly reactions that involve electrons. Physics tends to focus more on the nuclear part of the atom, as well as the subatomic realm. Really, they are two sides of the same coin.
The formal definition of chemistry is probably what you want to use if you're asked this question on a test. You may also need to practice basic chemistry concepts with a quiz.
Why Study Chemistry?
Because understanding chemistry helps you to understand the world around you. Cooking is chemistry. Everything you can touch or taste or smell is a chemical. When you study chemistry, you come to understand a bit about how things work. Chemistry isn't secret knowledge, useless to anyone but a scientist. It's the explanation for everyday things, like why laundry detergent works better in hot water or how baking soda works or why not all pain relievers work equally well on a headache. If you know some chemistry, you can make educated choices about everyday products that you use.
What Fields of Study Use Chemistry?
You could use chemistry in most fields, but it's commonly seen in the sciences and in medicine. Chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers study chemistry. Doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and veterinarians all take chemistry courses. Science teachers study chemistry. Fire fighters and people who make fireworks learn about chemistry. So do truck drivers, plumbers, artists, hairdressers, chefs... the list is extensive.
What Do Chemists Do?
Whatever they want. Some chemists work in a lab, in a research environment, asking questions and testing hypotheses with experiments. Other chemists may work on a computer developing theories or models or predicting reactions. Some chemists do field work. Others contribute advice on chemistry for projects. Some chemists write. Some chemists teach. The career options are extensive.
Where Can I Get Help With a Chemistry Science Fair Project?
There are several sources for help. A good starting point is the Science Fair Index on this website. Another excellent resource is your local library. Also, do a search for a topic that interests you using a search engine, such as Google.
Where Can I Find Out More About Chemistry?
Start with the Chemistry 101 Topic Index or list of Questions Chemistry Students Ask. Check out your local library. Ask people about the chemistry involved in their jobs.

RADIOACTIVE
~2.7 mins read
Radioactivity is a very famous term in nuclear physics and chemistry that describes how unstable atoms release certain radiations for the purpose of getting stability. You may have probably heard about
uranium , a radioactive element, used for making atomic bombs and electricity from nuclear power plants. It is possible due to the radioactive nature of uranium.
What is Radioactivity?
Structure of an atom.
Radioactivity is a natural phenomenon in which atoms of
elements that have unstable nuclei (nuclei = plural of nucleus), disintegrate for getting stability. There are 3 main reasons behind an unstable nucleus in an atom. These reasons are:
higher number of protons
higher number of neutrons
higher energy of the nucleus
When an element decay, it can change from one element to another for achieving stability. Sometimes when an element decay, it doesn’t change from one element to others but simply gets stability by releasing extra energy in the form of gamma rays.
Isotopes
Periodic table of elements
There are around 118 known elements that differ from each other by the number of protons in their atoms. For example, hydrogen has 1 proton and helium has 2 protons. The nucleus also has neutrons which when change in an element, creates a new isotope of that element.
Isotopes of an element have the same chemical properties, but they differ only in weight due to a difference in the number of neutrons. For example, hydrogen has three isotopes; protium, deuterium, tritium. These isotopes differ from each other due to a difference in the number of neutrons, while the number of protons remains the same. Elements from hydrogen to bismuth in the periodic table have at least one stable isotope. But, elements after bismuth have no stable isotope; they are all radioactive.
Types of Radioactivity
Radioactive isotopes of elements can emit 3 three types of radiations known as alpha rays, beta rays, and gamma rays.
Alpha rays – Alpha rays are positive charged particles that are composed of two protons and two neutrons (also called nuclei of helium). Alpha rays have a positive charge due to the presence of protons; the positively charged particles.
Beta rays – Beta rays are the streams of negatively charged particles, e.g. electrons, or positrons.
Gamma rays – Gamma rays are neutral and are different from alpha rays and beta rays because they are not made of matter particles. Instead, they are high energy electromagnetic radiations; a form of light that is very energetic and can’t be seen with naked eyes.
Half-Life and Measurement of Radioactivity
Carbon-12
A sample of a radioactive isotope of an element decays continuously at a fixed rate until the whole material has change into a stable isotope of an element. The term half-life is often used to define time in which half of the sample will turn into stable isotope. For example, the half-life of carbon-14 is around 5,730 years. It defines, if you place 1 kg sample of carbon-14, half of the carbon-14 will turn into a stable isotope in around 5,730 years.
Radioactivity and Human Health
Radiations from the decay of radioactive isotopes are not considered good for health due to several dangers involved in it. For example, when these radiations act on the human body, it damages the DNA and structures of cells. This results in the production of cancerous cells in our body and ultimately make a person very sick.
Facts
Radioactivity was first discovered by Henry Becquerel while working on an ore of uranium element called pitchblende.
Not all radiations are bad! We use X-rays to take photographs of the human body’s inside for detecting any damage or diagnosing some diseases.
Gamma rays are very penetrating radiations, they can easily penetrate through 1 meter thick wall of concrete – much like visible light penetrates through a transparent glass.

This Man Did Not Sit on Air For Hours, See the Trick he Did That Made People Believed He Sat On Air.
Let me open you eyes a little about magic.
When it comes to magic, they say the more you look, the less you see. Yes o. Guys, If you are the type that’s quick to swallow anything you are dished, then that’s very bad because these magicians will drag you down a part were they will use their cunning ways to trick you into giving them all your money and valuables.
For the critical thinkers, magic is nothing short of science. The other day, I showed you the trick a man did to make people believed that he walked on air. Today, I am going to reveal to you the trick this other magician did to make people believe that he sat on air for hours. But wait o, what’s with these magicians and air display?
Anyways, I saw a video today of how this magicians was bamboozling interested spectators and making them believe that he was sitting comfortably on air for hours. Is that even possible?
See screenshots of the video below :
If you look closely you will see how stunned the onlookers were as they watched the unbelievable event unfold before their very eyes. Two guys had to go and verify if the man was indeed sitting on air or on a transparent object.
But guess what? This man appeared to actually be sitting on thin air. Many were so impressed by his rare display of magical skills they started dropping money on his basket.
Now, here comes the truth. At first glance, you would be drawn into believing that he sat on air, but in all honesty, it’s impossible for human beings to suspend themselves on thin air. All this wise magician did, was to get himself a seat he could hide inside his baggy trousers, away from the eyes of unsuspecting onlookers.
This adjustable seat, is worn on one leg and the shoe of the leg wearing the seat is hinged on a solid material attached to the floor. It’s this material that holds the weight of the wearer when he sits or maneuvers.
In the video, a man was shown building similar adjustable seat and and revealing how it works.
After seeing this video, go back to the other video of our magician. The striking thing you will notice is that, one he did not at any time move his right leg which obviously was wearing the ‘leg seat.’ Secondly, he had a piece of rug on the floor which he used to cover the metal plate the right foot was hinged on.
This my friends, is how the magician comfortably sat on a hidden seat and made his onlookers believed he was doing wonders.
